I don't personally object to paying for new/contemporary work but I do object to paying for the old OSes from a now defunct company. That said, fact is every amiga os from 1.2 to 3.1 was developed by Commodore long ago and neither Hyperion nor Cloanto wrote a single line of code for those. Cloanto's position is that they are happy for Hyperion to continue to develop OS3 but not to charge money for it. Cloanto, who do own/control the IP for OS3, have issued cease and desist letters to prevent Hyperion selling 3.1.x and 3.2. They don't have any legal right to be develop and sell any version of OS3. Very arguable whether paying them money is "supporting development".Īs per the last round of court cases Hyperion were only granted/confirmed to have a licence to develop Amiga OS4 and OS5. Hyperion, who commissioned and sell 3.1.x and 3.2, apparently didn't pay their devs, so it isn't clear who that money is going to.
